AUSTRALASIAN STEAM NAVIGATION Co., Sydney WONGA WONGA 1854-1881 CLASSIC STEAM - SAILING SHIP of the late 1800's servicing Australian ports 444 gross tons, Lbd: 207'2" x 25'3" x 16'7". Iron Steamship / sail built by J & G Thomson, Govan Scotland and launched Monday, 15 May 1854 for the Australasian Steam Navigation Co., Sydney. Lengthened 1868 becoming 662 gross tons, and Lbd: 242'9" x 27'5" x 16'6". 270 horsepower engine. Saw much service on the Australian coast as a passenger vessel. Visited Otago New Zealand in September 1861 during their Gold rush era. Was also chartered to make the run from Australia to California on official mail service. Australian Government's COMMONWEALTH LINE OF STEAMERS AUSTRALBROOK Built 1909 4,336 tons. Built by Greenock & Grangemouth Dockyard Co as the Strathesk. Purchased by the Australian Government in 1916 along with 14 other vessels from English Shipowners. This photo was taken when the Australbrook visited the USA in November 1916, en route from the Mediterranean. She loaded at New York with supplies for New Zealand and Australia. Survived the perils of the first world war, and served australia's shipping needs until sold in 1924 to Japanese interests and renamed Uga Maru 6 x 4 inch postcard US $5.00

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL LINE DARLING RIVER 1966-79 33,774 gross tons, 19,640 net. 49,375 deadweight. Bulk carrier built at BHP's Whyalla Shipbuilding and Engineering Works, Whyalla South Australia for the Australia National Line. Seen here just upon completion. Sold February 1979 and towed from Hobart to Taiwanese shipbreakers where work began June 1979 Restoration of this image was carried out by Allan Jewell at Photocover, with thanks 6 x 4 inch postcard. NORTH COAST STEAM NAVIGATION Co., Sydney WOLLONGBAR 1922-43 2,005 gross tons, 811 net. Lbd: 285'5" x 40'2" x 23'8". 2,239 gross tons, 874 net. Lbd: 285'1" x 42'1" x 23'9". Steel steamship of two funnels built by Lithgows Ltd., Glasgow, to replace vessel of same name wrecked Byron Bay, 1921. 218 horsepower. Capable of 20 knots. This replacement vessel along with the Orara became very popular for passengers in a service that ran Sydney to Byron Bay and from there connected to Brisbane via omnibus. Torpedoed by Japanese submarine off Crescent Head, New South Wales, 29 April 1943. No passengers aboard however 32 crew perished with only five survivors. This image is purported to be of the first named vessel, however as both were almost identical I canot make a definite decision on this one. Image itself is too rare too overlook 6 x 4 inch postcard US $5.00 Princes Pier Port Melbourne OSTERLEY & ESPERANCE BAY circa 1920 Twin funnelled Osterley of the P & O line seen here closest to the shore. Behind her, at outer west berth is the Esperance Bay of the Australian Commonwealth Line of Steamers, later becoming part of the Aberdeen-White Star Line. A third vessel possibly of Shaw Savill seen at inner east berth, however remains unidentified.
